Maija's slatted structure recalls light streaming out though the window blinds of Baltic homes and shops and the hanging version offers a similar warm, filtered effect in a variation on the 1955 design. Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara, now regarded as a midcentury virtuoso, crafted a graceful, durable tower of stacked metal discs that immediately gained renown. Now refreshed with energy-saving LED technology and available in a pair of sizes, it comes in the original white and pale nude rose.
