In between braving the 30-degree temps, dining on reindeer and herring, and a sundry of day and late-night vendor events, traveling by subway in the Swedish capitol includes an eyeful of public artworks throughout miles of 3 Metro lines. Talk about underground art.

At 68 miles and more than 90 stations, this body of murals and standalone paintings, charcoal sketches and pastel neon, tile works, old farm pieces as found art and even a small sailing boat in a glass box combine to make this the world’s largest and longest gallery.

The city’s mandate to make art accessible to everyone and to beautify urban spaces began with the underground’s construction in the 1950s. Today, more than 1.2 million passengers ride the Stockholm Metro daily, among them visitors to the city taking site-specific tours to learn more of some of the art by more than 150 Swedish artists who have contributed original works to these tunnels.
