British icon and statesman Sir Winston Churchill personally chose BL1 Table Lamp for his desk, cementing its maker Bestlite in the public imagination. Launched in 1930, British designer Robert Dudley Best created this clean-lined lamp with a flexible arm and movable shade in the spirit of the then-reigning school of Bauhaus. (Interestingly, an Architects Journal feature lauding Bestlite was the first evidence of Bauhaus in England.) With its refined functionality, Bestlite was first adopted by the Royal Air Force engineering departments but, more than 80 years on, today it is more commonly seen in a workspace, home office or even as bedside lighting.
