Description

With its signature stepped silhouette and handwoven rattan surface, Italian design maestro Joe Colombo’s Basket series includes a cozily scaled 2 seater. Though best known for his futuristic plastic furniture, Colombo quite persuasively departed from form in this exceptionally well-crafted sofa, with its rattan “skin” placed over a skeleton made from environmentally responsible steel to give the piece strength and stability. Appealingly deep upholstered cushions exude a promise of comfort, with bespoke coverings available in a range of fine materials.

      Gubi

Design is an unceasing continuum, believes this Danish house, now owned by a second generation. Owner and creative director Jacob Gubi Olsen inherited the helm from his parents Gubi and Lisbeth Larson, who founded the business to showcase their postmodern furniture. Under Jacob’s watch, Gubi added a global focus to its roots in Copenhagen, with a cosmopolitan array of furniture, lighting and interior objects.

Alongside 20th Century icons such as Robert Dudley Best and Greta Magnusson-Grossman, the design house has championed a new wave of design studios including GamFratesi, Space Copenhagen and OeO Studio. “I started out with two very strong designs, Bestlite—a Bauhaus collection designed in 1930—and Gubi Chair, designed in 2003. I felt they had something in common,” says Jacobs. “Iconic appearance, functional design, high quality, aesthetic design language and adaptable for many different kinds of interiors. I took these values as a guideline for any new designs added to the collection ever since.”

      Designer

      Joe Colombo

Visionary Italian designer Joe Colombo redefined modern living through his futuristic, colorful and multifunctional designs. Born in Milan, Colombo initially pursued a career in painting before turning to industrial design, where he swiftly rose to prominence in the 1960s. His work reflects a pioneering approach, embracing technology and versatility to craft pieces that adapt to the evolving needs of contemporary life.

Colombo’s designs are celebrated for their modularity and adaptability, exemplified in lighting creations such as the Spider Lamp and Topo Table Lamp. His emphasis on space-saving solutions and architectural sensibilities allowed him to design furniture and lighting that transformed the way people interact with their environments.

With a forward-thinking ethos, Joe Colombo’s creations continue to resonate, and many of his designs remain in production today.
